3-Phase is an exhibition and development opportunity for UK-based artists within five years of beginning their practice, and was launched in 2015 in through the Jerwood Encounters series in partnership with Eastside Projects. It provides exceptional early career artists with curatorial and practical support to make and exhibit new work at three UK locations and is selected through a national open call. Three artists each receive mentoring from the three current participating organisations, Jerwood Charitable Foundation, Eastside Projects and WORKPLACE, together with a fee to produce new work
We launched this initiative in response to a need for new and forward thinking models for working in partnership to support the development of early career artist’s work over a sustained period of time. This innovative model aims to identify artistic potential from across the Midlands, the North, and the rest of the UK, allowing for a UK wide peer group to form. It highlights the benefits of artists and organisations working together as part of a national dialogue; constructing a space of encounter between the thinking of selected artists and supporting arts organisations around the developing bodies of work.
The artists selected in 2017 are: Larry Achiampong; Mark Essen and Nicola Singh.
They were selected by Kelly Best, Artist and 2015 3-Phase exhibitor; Paul Moss, Co-Director, WORKPLACE; Gavin Wade, Director, Eastside Projects and Sarah Williams, Head of Programme, Jerwood Visual Arts.
