As a key strand of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Training Programme is designed to add value through providing a dedicated mentor, professional development training and networking opportunities for the bursary recipients over and above the support they receive from their host organisation. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation is one of the programme’s key funders and is supporting this development programme specifically, in line with their funding goals, to nurture and encourage the next generation in the arts.
The final event, hosted by Eastside Projects in Birmingham, focused on career planning to equip the bursary recipients with the skills they need to move on from their placements. The day’s workshop was run by Mark Wright, Director at People Create and cultural leadership trainer Nicola Turner, Director at NT Creative Arts, who led the bursary recipients to draw on their experiences in their placements, as well as providing practical tools for successful leadership and creating high performance teams.
A selection of bursary recipients gave short presentations throughout the day, highlighting the unique work they are leading on around the country. Amy Stevenson, Curatorial Assistant at Hepworth Wakefield, spoke of her collaboration with Jack Thomson, a fellow bursary recipient who is a Graduate Dancer at Phoenix Dance in Leeds, as part of Hepworth Wakefield’s 5th birthday celebrations. Amy called on Jack after a dance troupe due to perform at the event pulled out at the last minute and asked if he would devise a show in response to the gallery’s exhibition and perform it at the event the next day, to great acclaim.
As well as the skills element of the day, this was also an invaluable opportunity for the bursary recipients to develop their peer network and there was a real sense of interaction and collaboration among the cohort.
To date, 13 bursary recipients have had their placements extended by their host organisations and will remain in post, in some cases with enhanced roles, for extended contracts of between 2 and 24 months.
